One of Hanoi’s highlights is her food, for sure! You can find it everywhere and you will always see people eating. There are a lot of specialties and various dishes you can get, so you’ll never get bored. Hanoi offers a lot of amazing food that you definitely need to try!
Don’t know where to start? There are really good street food tours that can help you out with trying.

Bun Dau Mam Tom - vegetarian option

Is vermicelli & tofu with shrimp paste. The dish consists of fried tofu, grilled green rice flakes, pork and vermicelli noodles. You eat this by dipping the noodles into the shrimp paste with the fresh herbs and pork. But be aware of dipping. It is a shrimp paste that is super pungent so you only need a little of it. You can eat it at No 2 Trang Tien Alley (near Hanoi Opera House), Phat Loc Alley (Old Quarter) and Hang Khay Street.

Banh mi - vegetarian option

Is a Vietnamese sandwich. The most popular one is banh mi pate. A fluffy baguette filled with pate, cold cuts, cucumber, pickled carrots & daikon. The sandwich will be finished by adding hot sauce and mayonnaise. You have the option to order it with egg. There are also a lot of other bahn mi options. You can literally order this everywhere in Hanoi. Especially on the street. A suggestion is to eat at No 25 Hang Ca.

Banh Cuon (steamed pork wraps) - vegetarian option

Is fresh steamed rice paper wrap filled with pork and mushroom. Topped with crunchy fried shallots. Fish sauce, chilis and fresh herbs are served alongside. Eat it all together in a tiny bite for the maximum taste. It’s really easy to find the vendors. They are sitting next to a big steamer with buckets of rice flour mix.
Banh Cuon Thanh Van-No 14 Hang Ga, Banh cuon Ba Hoanh- add: 66 To Hien Thanh, Banh Cuon gia truyen- No 72 Hang Bo are places.

Bun rieu (crab noodle soup)

A northern crab and tomato noodle soup made with thin round rice noodles. It’s not real crab meat in there, but more like clusters of crab egg. Other ingredients for this dish are tamarind paste, fried tofu, rice vinegar, garcinia multiflora champ and annatto seeds. The soup has a light, tangy tomato flavor with a hint of the sea. Fresh herbs, shredded banana flower, spearmint, perilla and bean sprouts are served alongside. You can find a good bun rieu at No 2F Quang Trung or Bun Rieu Hai Beo No 15 Hang Chinh

Bun Oc (snail vermicelli soup)

Is a vermicelli rice noodle soup with tomato-based broth. The broth is made from chicken and/or pork bones. The dish will be topped with escargots, fried tofu, prawns, fish cake, herbs and vegetables. a little shrimp paste and chilis. You can eat this dish cold or hot. Two places to try good bun oc are: Bún Ôc Cô Huệ at Nguyễn Siêu Str and Bún Ốc Hang Khoai

Bun Cha (grilled pork & vermicelli)

With bun cha you’ll get two different kinds of pork: strips of meat and minced pork patties. They soak the meat in a light fish sauce soup. To give it a little more flavor they add red chili and minced garlic. Most of the time they serve it with vermicelli and a mountain of fresh herbs. Put everything together and dip it in de soup to get a maximum taste. You can eat good bun cha at:
1. No 75 Hang Quat
2. Bún Chả Cô Nga at Đồng Xuân Market Alley ( Open: 6.30 AM- 16.30 PM)
3. Bún Chả Đắc Kim at No 67 Đường Thành and No 01 Hàng Mành
4. An Bread, 15 Phu Doan Street, Hang Trong Ward, Hoan Kiem District (before 1pm)

Pho bo or pho ga (beef or chicken noodle) - Vegetarian option: Pho Chay

It’s the most common dish in Vietnam and every restaurant has it. A soup consisting of broth, soft rice noodles, herbs (mint, coriander) and meat (ga-chicken or bo (beef). The most soups are with chicken or beef. Pho is a popular street food and the specialty of a number of restaurant chains around the world. You can eat pho everywhere, but here some suggestions for the best: Beef Noodle:
1. Phở Sướng (24B Trung Yên)
2. Phở Vui ( 25 Hàng Giầy)
3. Phở Lý Quốc Sư (No. 10 Ly Quoc Su Str)
4. Phở Gia Truyền ( No. 49 Bat Dan Str)
5. Phở Cường (No. 23 Hàng Muối)
6. Chicken Noodle: Cô Béo (11 Hàng Hòm)

Bun gia cay (fake dog dish)

This dish is supposed to be a fake dog dish. Vietnamese eat it a lot. They use pork instead of a dog, so don’t worry if you don’t want to eat dog. Ingredients for this dish are vermicelli, pork manure, galangal, spicy vegetables, shrimp sauce and pork chops (which are marinated with spices and simmered to taste like plum plover of dog meat). They will serve the pig with vermicelli and raw vegetables. Places to eat: Bun giả cầy (Ngo Sy Lien Market) and Bún giả cầy- Sườn- Lưỡi ( No 6 Chân Cầm Str)

Pho Xao (stir fried noodles)

This is the Vietnamese version of chow mien but using pho noodles. The rice noodles are wok-fried with greens and meat. They use dark brown soy sauce to give the noodles a brown color.

Pho Cuon (pho roll) - vegetarian version

Is a dish originated from pho with a little change. The rice noodle is thin, square rolled with beef cooked and herbs. Some places also use pear and coriander. The served sauce is similar to fish sauce but less sweet and salty.
Place to eat: Pho Cuon Hung Ben - 33 Ngũ Xa
