The old imperial capital Hue is a place that needs to be on your travel list. Hue was the capital of Vietnam until 1945 and is very important in Vietnamese history. Besides history, the city has beautiful countryside, interesting highlights and the breathtaking Perfume River.

Most of the lives of the Nguyen emperors took place within the walls of the Citadel in Hue. During a visit to Hue, you should visit some of the Royal Mausolea. The people believe that the spirits of the kings are still alive. The Mausolea are historical sights surrounded by lakes, waterfalls and hills. Every Mausoleum consists of a:
  • temple: dedicated to a deceased emperor and his queen
  • yellow stone: contains biographical data and tells a historical story
  • tomb: royal tomb itself
Hue’s surroundings has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Thanks to the city’s pagodas, old monuments, Citadel and dig. There are also two beautiful beaches besides the sights, where you can have a relaxed day. Thuan An Beach and Lang Co Beach are the perfect places to be.

Another very popular sight is the Perfume River. The river is about 80 kilometers long and flows through many aromatic plants and forests. You will find many boats on the river that provide a home for people. It is recommended to take a boat trip to experience the city from the water. The tours usually run along with the Thien Mu Pagoda, the Hon Chen temple and the Mausolea: Tu Duc, Khai Dinh and Minh Mang.

How to get there?

PLANE

Hue has an international airport, called Phu Bai (HUI). You can only fly from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and there are three airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific and Vietjet. The airport is 15 kilometers away from the center.

TRAIN

The train station is an express stop on the north-south line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. You can take the SE prefix or the TN trains, which are a little slower. The station in Hue is about 20 minutes walking to the hotels. Trains depart from Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.

BUS

There are two bus stations in Hue: southern ‘Phia Nam Station’ and northern ‘Phia Bac Station’. You can take busses from Dong Hoi, Phong Nha, Vinh, Lao Bao, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Book tickets at a travel agency or at the bus station.
