The old imperial capital Hue is a place that needs to be on your travel list. Hue was the capital of Vietnam until 1945 and is very important in Vietnamese history. Besides history, the city has beautiful countryside, interesting highlights and the breathtaking Perfume River.
PLANE
Hue has an international airport, called Phu Bai (HUI). You can only fly from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and there are three airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific and Vietjet. The airport is 15 kilometers away from the center.
TRAIN
The train station is an express stop on the north-south line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. You can take the SE prefix or the TN trains, which are a little slower. The station in Hue is about 20 minutes walking to the hotels. Trains depart from Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.
BUS
There are two bus stations in Hue: southern ‘Phia Nam Station’ and northern ‘Phia Bac Station’. You can take busses from Dong Hoi, Phong Nha, Vinh, Lao Bao, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Book tickets at a travel agency or at the bus station.
Back in the days, it was officially housing the Emperor’s palace, temples and residence. This building is a symbol of wealth and power with the locals. The city is protected by 2 by 2 kilometers of land and inside the citadel, the city is located with a 2.5 kilometers long wall. Another name for the city is '' Purple Forbidden City '', because only the inner enclosure of the imperial family had access to it. It was built in the 17th century by Emperor Gia Long. The city is full of beautiful palaces, pagodas and tombs.
The most important citadel in the Imperial City. They started building in 1804 and finished in 1833. Each wall is 600 meter long, 4 meters high and 1 meter thick. There are four gates to enter and the Ngo Mon Gate was only reserved for the King.
This citadel is reserved for the Emperor and his family. It was constructed in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long. The walls are 1,230 meters in circumference, 3,72 meters high and 0,72 meters thick. In the front side stands the Dai Cung Mong
It took about eleven years to build this impressive grave. Khai Dinh is located on Mount Chau Chu, which offers beautiful views. The architecture is a mix of styles such as India and Roman influences. With great sculptures and 37 steps to the gate, it is worth a visit.
A very beautiful tomb with a huge lake, stone bridges and wooden constructions. It was constructed in 1864 and took three years to finish. The tomb was used as a Summer Palace and retreat.
This 21-meter one-pillar pagoda was built in mid-19th century by Emperor Thieu Tri and is the oldest in Hue. It has a natural setting with ancient architecture and the purpose was to spread Buddhism. The pagoda is surrounded with a garden of plants and flowers and one of the twenty most beautiful landscapes.
Address: Kim Long, Huong Hoa, Hue
A beautiful river of 80 kilometers long, flowing through the Hue center. It flows through many aromatic plants and forest. Along the river are many pagodas and other highlights located. You can take a paddleboat tour and visit some of these great attractions.
If you have plenty of time and you want to have a relaxed day at the beach, Thuan An is a perfect option!

Hue is a great city to discover by bike. You can cycle along the perfume river and to the Citadel. On the east side of Hue rice fields, flower and vegetable farms are located. West of Hue is the opposite with routes through the hills and past the temples, pagodas, garden houses, etc.
